With the average male needing to shave over 10,000 times in his lifetime, it's astounding to consider how little attention most blokes give this painful ritual of modern life. Here's FHM's golden rules to getting it right every time:
1. Prep properly
Don’t get too excited – you need to allow your skin a few hits of the snooze button first thing in the morning. Like you, your face needs some time to wake up before it’s ready for a shave. About 10 to 15 minutes should do the trick, so jumping in the shower will help twofold: it’ll wake your sorry arse up, and give your face time to de-puff while allowing the steam to soften your beard, which is essential for a close and comfortable shave. Alternatively, use a warm, wet cloth on your face. You can further prep by cleansing and exfoliating. This cleans the skin, removing dirt and oils, and lifts any hairs stuck under the surface.
2. Change it up
Your shaving kit is not something you want to skimp on. If you shave every day, you will need to change your blade every fortnight – even more frequently if you’re almost simian. You can squeeze another week out of a blade if you soak it in mouthwash after use and allow it to air dry. But as soon as you feel that niggling drag, bin it. Granted, blades are a massive rip-off, but you’re part of a very captive audience, so either cough up, or walk around looking like Norman Gunston.
