“Grow it, Flow it, Show it”…. Movember hits Darwin town

If you hadn’t already noticed, tis the season of excess hair and it is well and truly upon us. The month of Movember, formally know November, has rolled through Darwin like a cyclone, devastating the top lip of many Darwinians.

Yes the mighty Mo is back in town with men all over (and boys trying to) grow and groom their moustaches in all their glory to raise money for Men’s health issues.

Movember is a now a global charity event, allegedly started by a group of Adelaide men, which raises awareness of Men’s Health issues, in particular prostate cancer and male depression.

And how does it work? At the start of Movember guys resister with a clean shaven face then they have the rest of the month to sprout, nurture and nourish their budding hairs into the epitomy of masculinity. Simple really. If your name is not Jordan. These mo bros are sponsored to grow, flow and show their mo and all money raised goes to the charity.

Movember is the month for man, with men’s health issues in the spotlight with the humble mo – such a traditional symbol of manliness. But why the mo and all its trimmings?!

“Men lack awareness about the very real health issues they face. There is an attitude that they have to be tough - "a real man" - and are reluctant to see a doctor about an illness or go for regular medical checks.
Movember aims to change these attitudes and make men's health fun by putting the Mo back on the face of fashion and in the process raise some serious funds for key men's health issues, including:
Prostate Cancer: because every year 2,900 Australian men die from prostate cancer and over 18,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Depression in Men: because one in six men experience depression at any given time but most don't seek help.
Movember was created as a formal charity in 2004 and has since generated over 30 million globally, raised awaremness of prostate cancer and depression in the community and is contiuously working to change the attitude men have about their health.” (www.movember.com.au)

There are many types of mo’s out there from the Handlebars to the Walrus, with new ones always emerging, such as Jordan Peters of Hot 100, hoping that this year – the ‘Reverse Hitler’ will be it. “Its very popular in West Germany” he tries to justify the lack of consistency in his attempted mo.

Check out the official Movember site from 1999 www.movember.org for a good laugh and if desired – some much needed inspiration, encouragement and tips for dealing with your new humble lip caterpillar. www.wikipedia.org also has some good mo info!

Weather it be disgust and delight you feel to see the resurgence of the once great moustache you have to hand it to the Movember charity – it is doing a great job in raising awareness and funding for men’s heath issues.

And then it’s all over too soon, climaxing at the end of the month with Mo parties all over town. Don’t miss the “Shaving party” at vodka bar sat 29th November. But there is ample time before that to check out JaxonShore feat Rick the drummer and the hot bar staff, at the Vodka Bar on Saturday nights to monitor their progress – or lack there of! Donations can be made to support prostate cancer and Male depression.  If you are lucky – you may catch a glimpse of the Reverse Hitler.

Peace love and happiness to all the mo bros and sistas out there! Check out the official Movemeber site www.movember.com.au for more info and how you can contribute.

Go on, get your mo on…

NB: Beyond Movember – there is a whole world of moustache lovers out there awakening the movement to bring back the Mo with cries of “Down the Razors and Join us, for the Revolution is here”. Google it.

The Responce from Jordan

It has come to my attention (from taunts and so on) that I have recently been attacked publicly for my lack of facial hair this Movember. I still maintain that it is not the lack of hair that is the problem but more the colour (which is slightly ranga).

This did not, however, stop the taunts, in fact, it increased them. (It's amazing how cruel Lucy and Louise have become, they used to be such nice girls but now they wouldn't brake if you we're crossing the street)

I fell into a deep well of self-pity.

Then, one night as I cried myself to sleep, I decided to play my best of Gloria Gaynor CD and "I will survive" came on. I felt invigorated! I said no to the oppressive shackles the girls had placed on me and I decided then and there to go on a journey of manprovment.

I went to my local hair dressers and demanded that they dye my beard to the colour it's supposed to be, a rich "Ron Burgundy" brown.

And after 20 minutes, I emerged a new man, like a butterfly bursting from its cocoon. With a full face of beautiful hair!

So I say this Movember, don't be ashamed and don't let people put you down!

If you can't grow it, fake it.

MENS HEALTH

Here in Australia we men don't have a great reputation for looking after ourselves what with the unhealthy diet and the love of a few too many beers.

Medically things don't look too good. You just have to check out the increase in male specific cancers and the growing prevalence of coronary heart disease, chronic liver disease and obesity.

However we look at it, men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy for men is five years less than females (presently 78 compared to 83).

Men access health services 30-40% less than women, thereby denying themselves the chance for prevention and early detection of common diseases.

Prostate Cancer: Every year 2,700 Australian men die of prostate cancer - equivalent to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually. Find out more

Male Depression: One in six men suffer from depression at any given time but most don't seek help. Find out more

Testicular Cancer: It's the second most common cancer in young men aged 18 to 35. Find out more

Movember (the month fromerly known as November) is an annual charity event held during November.

At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember particitpants, known as Mo Bros, have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their Mo, raising money along the way to benefit men's health - specifically prostate cancer and male depression. Support this great cause and donate here.
