To quote a good friend, Litchfield is awesome. Being incredibly reachable by 2WD is not the only bonus here. Pristine swimming holes at Florence Falls, Buley Rockhole and Wangi Falls make for a relaxing and entertaining day in the outdoors. There is one particular time of day when Wangi Falls are at their best – your probably not going to like this but you guessed it, early in the morning. Relax in the natural spa within the rock face, take in the faultless reflection in the water, and catch some local wildlife sneaking down for an early morning drink. A good place to have a picnic lunch, with grassy areas also catering for a quick game of Frisbee, cricket, or just kicking a footy around.
Keen for some well researched jumping and climbing activities (safety first please!) Florence was called upon to entertain. Be aware that the descent into the Falls is via a set of 135 stairs and what goes down, must come up. Including any esky’s. Bugger… An alternative route back to the main carpark consists of a 1km track along the Shady Creek, and although takes longer than the stairs, is a bit easier on the old body.
After a few plunges into the deeper water and thrill seeking activities at Florence, Buley Rockhole is the perfect place to unwind for the remainder of the day. Find a spot in your own private pool, let the water fall over your shoulders for a personal massage and watch the sun go down through the scrub with the popular swimming hole suddenly deserted. What a special experience…
Litchfield can be seen in one day, but I would definitely recommend staying the night to ensure you get the most out of all the sights. Bush campsites are available at all swimming holes with a small fee payable via an Honesty Box system; alternatively a number of Van Parks are located both within and on the outskirts of the Park.
No plans for this weekend??? Problem solved!
If it’s been a few years, or your new to the area – GET OUT THERE!! Take the kids, the rello’s or a bunch of mates. Swimming is the best fun you can have with your clothes half on!!
