DJ Wiz epitomises the rise and rise of Darwin DJ talent. First breaking onto the scene through The Darbies and The Saloon in mid to late 90’s, he has over 13 years experience getting Darwinites on to the dance floor and leading the party direction. The opening of Time Nightclub was when the big nights started happening for Wiz, where the crowd was introduced more and more to dance music and the underground music scene as opposed to radio acts. As a result there was more than half a decade of good crowds in Time.

Wiz describes his time as being a full time DJ as ‘a bit of a blur from the brain cells I have left’, which somewhat encapsulates the lifestyle of this dream job for many. He reiterates the difficulty of the finer points of becoming successful in this profession, ‘you can’t open your doors at 10 O’Clock and go full metal. That comes with experience. I tell most young guys if you can get out there and dance to a beat, hold a beat your pretty much right, all you have to do is keep practicing.’ Sounds too easy. ‘Unless’, he continued after a thought, ‘your tone deaf and then we hear elephants playing basketball’.

Perhaps the most accurate way to describe his style is hard house or hard trance. The sounds that keep you banging till the wee hours of the morn. ‘I’ve always been drawn to the hard style because of the energy it gives. Some songs will give you goose bumps while other songs you can jump around like a mad man.’ The freedom of hard style music allows Wiz to keep surprising the dance floor and take them on a musical journey. Keeping in mind that today’s music culture is heading very much down the tech house and electro house pathways, Wiz is certain to maintain versatility in his style, a necessity to be triumphant in Darwin. ‘When your in front of the decks you need to be able to read the crowd. You don’t play music for yourself or your friends, you play to the entire room. If people are tapping their feet, or dancing on the spot, you have their attention and you can work the room from there’.

Developing a profile in Darwin’s music scene inevitably brings with it a number of interesting experiences, to say the least. DJ Wiz has survived black outs in wet season storms, a candid array of groupies and displays of the power of ‘party mode’ psyche. ‘I’ve seen people trip up the top of the stairs at Time, roll all the way down, you think they’ve broken their neck, then they get up and walk straight to the dance floor and start dancing.’

The career of DJ Wiz has been nurtured by Darwin, and although he has ventured South to compete (and win, mind you) on the decks, Darwin is home. Southern DJ’s tend to compete more with each other for spots in clubs whereas here, the vibe is a friendly one, with everybody’s aim to keep pleasing the crowds. ‘I’m loving up here with what I do, and I’m still making a lot of people happy. You get internationals and Southern DJ’s here and they can’t get over the crowd and the atmosphere we’ve created’.

Well he must be doing something right! In the end, all that counts to a maestro behind the decks is that his crowd is feeling a good vibe, and with DJ Wiz in control, this is pretty much guaranteed.
